Fabio Fognini v Casper Ruud Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two and both of them were won by Ruud. Both the matches came in 2020, at the ATP Cup and Hamburg Open and Fognini failing to win more than three games in any of those sets.

Fognini’s record all season coming into this season was mediocre at best but when he lost in the first round of the Marbella Open last week, there was that nagging worry among his fans the form was plateauing and reaching levels of the previous season.
The defending champion seems to have silenced all his critics with his showing so far at the Monte-Carlo Masters, winning all his three rounds so far in straight sets, including the last match against Filip Krajinovic.
Fognini needed an hour and 29 minutes to get past the Serb, clinching his place in the quarterfinals 6-2, 7-6 (1). A couple of early breaks in the first set set the ball rolling for Fognini and while he fell 0-3 behind in the second, the Italian broke back as Krajinovic served for the set.
From there on, a tie-breaker looked imminent and a resurgent took control of it from the word go to win it 7-1.
Earlier in the competition, Fognini had gotten past Miomir Kecmanovic and Jordan Thompson in an equally easy manner.

Ruud Sends PCB Packing
There wasn’t much to choose between Ruud and Pablo Carreno Busta going into their third round match, with both starting out at 10/11 for a win. The result lived up to the bookmakers’ expectations.
In the end, Ruud needed nearly three hours and three sets to get past his Spanish opponent and set up a meeting with the 2019 winner of this competition. What made the match an interesting watch was both players earned three breaks of serves, but it was Carreno Busta who had the better of the chances.
Ruud got only five opportunities to get past his opponent and broke thrice, while Carreno Busta had 11 chances and missed out on eight of them. And that’s where the match turned around in favour of the Norwegian.
This win takes Ruud to the quarter-finals, his second such appearance in Masters 1000 competitions after having made the semifinal of the Italian Open last season. With wins over Holger Rune and Diego Schwartzman already in this tournament, Ruud will have the confidence to usurp his opponent and make it his second semifinal at this level.

While Fognini is the defending champion and has won all his matches in this competition in straight sets, Ruud’s form has been second to none with victories over two of the top players. And given his own propensity to do well on clay, he starts off as our pick to win this.
