Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Tsonga and Gerasimov before this first round encounter in Barcelona.

Tsonga Has One Win Since October 2019

When Tsonga made it to the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters in 2019, little would he have envisaged that he would enter the Barcelona Open in 2021 with just one tour win in the ensuing period.

That’s how it has been though, with injuries and the pandemic pushing the former world number five back. In the interim period, Tsonga played just two matches in 2020 – at the Australian Open and ATP Doha – and followed it up with a long layoff till the start of this season.

Even in 2021, his season began with a loss in Montpellier, followed by that only victory in Marseille and two more defeats. The last of those losses came at the ATP Dubai where at 3-3 in the first set against Malek Jaziri, Tsonga had to retire from the match leading to speculations of a retirement in the offing.

But here he is, battling on and wanting to get back to his winning ways. He starts off with an opening round encounter he should be able to manage but will his match fitness support his cause?

Gerasimov Needs to Better Clay Record

A finalist at the Pune Open last season, Gerasimov also made it as far as the semifinal at the Montpellier Open earlier this season where he registered wins over Andy Murray, Aljaz Bedene and Alejnadro Fokina.

When it comes to clay, however, Gerasimov’s record falls off the cliff. In fact, when he registered a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Guido Pella in the first round of the Cagliari Open early in April, it was his first ever main draw victory at the ATP level on clay.

It was quickly followed by a defeat to Bedene in the second round there and a qualifying loss at the hands of Henri Laaksonen at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

What that means is while he now takes on a player who has himself been down in the rut for the reasons mentioned above, it doesn’t make his own task too much easier. In fact, if anything, it would be Tsonga who starts off more confident of the two players.

Tsonga v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Bookmakers have pegged Gerasimov as a favourite but given the issues he has had, Tsonga should have a very good chance in this one. Backing the Frenchman to win it.

Tip: Tsonga to win: 6/5 (bet365)
