Barbora Krejcikova v Cagla Buyukakcay Head to Head

Their first meeting had come in the Shenzhen Open qualifiers in 2018 and Buyukakcay had won that on a hard court surface in straight sets. Krejcikova came through in the quarterfinals of an ITF competition in 2019 on clay the following year.

Krejcikova at Her Career-Best

Krejcikova had made a solid start to the season with a quarterfinal appearance at the Grampians Trophy but second round defeats on either side of that and a failure to qualify for the WTA Dubai meant she needed bit of a turnaround.

She was, after all, a semifinalist at the Linz Open and made it as far as the fourth round of the French Open last season, helping her climb from being 131st in the world to 65th at the end of 2020.

It was at the WTA Dubai that things looked to have really changed for Krejcikova. Starting out with a shock win over Maria Sakkari, the Czech went on to surprise Jelena Ostapenko, Svetlanad Kuznetsova, Anastasia Potapova and Jil Teichmann before it needed the in-form Garbine Muguruza to take her down in the final.

While Krejcikova fell in the second round in Miami, she had done enough to move to her career-best ranking of 38th in the world.

Can she now add some clay court sparkle to the season?

Buyukakcay Gets a Wildcard in Home Competition

Ranked 176th in the world, Buyukakcay will be playing in the main draw of her third tournament of the season. Her previous two, at Doha and St. Petersburg, both resulted in opening round defeats with Buyukakcay failing to win even a set.

Her only wins this year have come on the ITF circuit where the Turk reached the quarterfinal of the Fujairah ITF competition.

Interestingly enough, Buyukakcay had won this title in 2016, her first and only WTA win while her last two titles on the lower circuit also came on clay. So while Buyukakcay starts off as a second favourite coming up against a player who has been in the form of her life, the advantage she does have is her clay court showings over the years.

Can she cause an early upset here?

Krejcikova v Buyukakcay Prediction and Tip

While Krejcikova’s straight-set win looks like a decent possibility, we also expect Buyukakcay to push her opponent here and we could see a few games played.

Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
