Feliciano Lopez v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between both players on the tour.

Evergreen Lopez In The Twilight of His Career

Feliciano Lopez made his debut in 2002  and has been an evergreen member on the tour since. Once ranked as high as number 12 in the world, he is currently ranked just outside the top 60 and although 39 years of age, he still continues to be a force, especially on the faster surfaces in both the singles and doubles versions.

The 2020 season saw him play an important role Down Under, especially in the doubles game, assisting Team Spain in getting to the finals of the inaugural ATP Cup, but falling short of defeating Serbia in the final tie.

As he turns 40 this year, Lopez has mentioned nearing the end of his career, and that he will like to make every tournament count.

The 2021 season started with a third round run Down Under at the Aussie Open before falling to in-form Andrey Rublev, after having succeeded against upcoming Italian Lorenzo Sonego. However, Lopez has run into difficult waters with opening round losses at Marseille, Mexico and Dubai.

His clay swing began with a second round loss at the Andalucia Open to Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz and he will be hoping for a better run here on, starting with this week at Barcelona.

Promising Musetti Hoping For Strong Run On Clay

After a successful surprise showing during the latter part of 2020, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti began the year by reaching two Challenger finals.

What stood out was an inspired run last month to the semifinals in Acapulco, which included wins over Diego Schwartzmann, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov. His run of six victories in a row, including wins in the three qualifiers, ended with a semifinal defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The youngest player currently in the top-100 in the world, the World No. 84 Musetti carried the momentum to Miami, defeating Michael Mmoh and Benoit Paire in the first two rounds to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the second time in his young career. A fourth round remained elusive though as he was beaten by Marin Cilic.

The Italian continued his good form in Cagliari to kickstart the clay season defeating Dennis Novak and top seed Daniel Evans to reach a second quarterfinal this year, but was stopped by Laslo Djere from progressing further.

While Musetti was one of the players to look out for at the Monte Carlo Masters this week, he was eliminated by another surprise package of this season, i.e. Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. The Italian will be hoping he can make amends and get his season back on track, especially here on the European clay.

Lopez v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Although this has the making of an exciting battle between the past and the future, given the surface and recent clay form, the teenager Musetti starts as a strong favorite against the veteran, Lopez.

Lopez’s game is not the best suited to the slow surfaces and will be a difficult task against the young legs and strong baseline game of his teenage opponent. Expect Musetti to win in two tight sets.

Tip: Musetti to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
