Jelena Ostapenko v Stephanie Voegele Head to Head

The pair have met before, and Voegele has won on each occasion, Their first meeting came in a junior event in France in 2015, the German winning in three sets on clay. Later that same year they met in the final in Linz, this time on hard courts, with Voegele claiming  straight set victory.

Ostapenko Looking to Regain Lost Form

Still only  23, it has been almost four years since Ostapenko won the French Open as a teenager, becoming the first layer from Latvia to win a Grand Slam and the first unseeded player to win the event sine 1933 (although Iga Świątek has since emulated that feat).

At that point she seemed to have a  bright future before her, but it has not quite panned out as she had hoped, and several years of indifferent form have seen her drift down the rankings.

This year that elusive search for consistency continues, with her best result of the year coming in Miami, where she reached the third round before losing to the eventual winner, Ashleigh Barty, the world number one.

Last week she played for Latvia in the Billie Jean Cup against India, and had a real struggle to beat Ankita Rana, the world 176.

She will be hoping for a change of fortune now that she is back on her favourite surface of clay.

Voegele Makes it Through as a Qualifier

Voegele’s one senior WTA final came back in 2018, when she lost the Mexican Open to the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. That was almost six years after her one appearance in a doubles’ final in Colombia, which ended in another defeat.

She has though won titles at the junior ITF level, the most recent of which came in France, on clay, three years ago.

Her best result in 2021 to date also came on clay, reaching the third round in Bogota earlier this month, eventually losing to the Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano.

Obliged to qualify here in Stuttgart, she enjoyed two relatively straightforward victories over German opponents, beating first Anna Zaja, and then Katharina Gerlach.

Ostapenko v Voegele Prediction and Tip

Although Voegele has won both their previous matches, Ostapenko will start as the favourite to progress. She has not enjoyed the best of form recently, but she is back on her favourite surface, and, by the law of averages, one day things will start to come good for her again.

Tip: Ostapenko to win: 6/13 (bet365)
