Veronika Kudermetova v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

There have been two matches played in the past between these two players, both of which have been won by Kanepi. Both the matches came on clay and in 2019, at the Charleston Open and the French Open.

Kudermetova Takes Circuitous Route in Opener

It could well be the season when Kudermetova comes of age. Typically known to be a hard court player and having started off the season with a finals appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open, she has already doubled her WTA tournament win tally with a victory at the Charleston Open two weeks ago.

And continuing from where she left off, Kudermetova also won her opener here in Istanbul, except it took her a roundabout route to get there.

Taking on Bernarda Pera in the first round, Kudermetova needed a final set tie-breaker to get past the American and seal her second round berth. The match lasted more than three hours and saw Kudermetova lose her serve five times as opposed to getting four breaks of serve herself.

Incidentally where Kudermetova might want to do better is convert her break-points, which she missed 14 of. With a first serve percentage reading a lowly 43 as well, the Russian has a few things to change before she can think of winning two titles in a row.

Kanepi Starts Clay Swing with Easy Win

Drawn to face Zarina Diyas in her opening round match in this tournament, Kanepi looked to have continued from where she left off her hard court form as she carved out a 6-4, 6-4 win.

In a match lasting an hour and 21 minutes, Kanepi lost her serve three times but in turn broke her opponent on six occasions to carve out a place in the second round.

In fact the match kick-started with four successive breaks of serves, and there came another stretch of three games where serves weren’t held. It was Kanepi’s hold in the 10th game of the opening set that allowed her to win the set.

The second set was a cagier affair, with a break of serve in the seventh game for Kanepi remaining the only instance of a serve getting broken. Kanepi had a chance to finish it off on Diyas’ serve in the ninth game but then held to love in the next game to win the encounter.

Kudermetova v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Some of Kanepi’s best results on the tour have come on clay while Kudermetova has shown in recent times she can do her bit  on the same surface. That makes this a thrilling contest and one that could see three sets.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
