The 34-year-old Chardy has had a solid season otherwise but after switching over to clay, the Frenchman has struggled to get going. He is 2-2 on win-loss record, having won opening round matches in Monte Carlo and Barcelona but with defeats in the second.
Clay, however, has never been a favourite surface for Chardy with his failure to qualify for the Italian Open and a first round at the French Open last season underlining how things were even last season.
Chardy will look to take confidence from his showing in 2019, having made the quarterfinal at three of the tournaments he featured in that year.
His only previous outing in Estoril also came in 2019 where he made the second round but the world number 51 has a difficult opponent to kick-start his proceedings here.

Munar Forced to Qualify
It has been a solid season for Munar so far, with all his matches having come on clay. Having begun the year on the Challenger circuit, back to back finals at Antalya Challenger were followed by the Buenos Aires Open quarterfinal appearance.
And he then reached the final of the Marbella Challenger as well in the lead-up to the Marbella Open played immediately after that at the same venue. There he raced into the final before falling to Pablo Carreno-Busta.
A second round entry in Barcelona saw him go down to Stefanos Tsitsipas but a rank as low as 86th in the world meant he still had to go through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw here.
Back to back straight-set wins ensured his qualification and he now takes on a player whose clay court record recently hasn’t been the best.
