Dusan Lajovic v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Lajovic and McDonald have never met on the ATP tour in the past and this would be the first occasion, when they will challenge each other on the men’s circuit.

Lajovic on a Losing Streak

Since making it to the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this season, Lajovic’s form has crash-landed. In fact, his form on the red dirt has been a cause of major concern, since he is known for his proficiency on the surface.

Lajovic tends to perform exceptionally well on clay as he has a solid baseline game and is quite capable of generating his own pace from both wings. Moreover, the Serb has the ability to create heavy kick on his serve, which is particularly effective on the red dirt.

However, somehow, the 30-year-old from Belgrade has failed to perform well on clay in 2021. Lajovic made a first round exit at the Monte Carlo Masters, losing to the rising Brit Daniel Evans in three close sets. Subsequently, he suffered a second round defeat at the hands of Argentina’s Federico Delbonis in Belgrade last week after receiving a bye in the opening round.

In Munich, Lajovic will look to find his form as it is important for him to regain his touch to make a deep run in the tournament. Otherwise, he would have to experience another early departure from yet another ATP event.

McDonald Qualifies in Straight Sets

Lajovic’s challenger in his Munich opener is the American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald. McDonald, who is currently ranked 127th in the world, did exceptionally well to win his two qualifying matches against Peter Gojowczyk of Germany and the Slovakian Andrej Martin in straight sets.

Indeed, McDonald’s talent is unquestionable as he has already shown glimpses of what he can actually achieve on a tennis court. During his run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open, the American beat the likes of Borna Coric, Marco Cecchinato and Lloyd Harris before being ousted by Daniil Medvedev of Russia in straight set.

A month later, McDonald put up a similar performance in Miami as he reached the second round of the tournament after coming through two rounds of qualifying. But, he couldn’t find the answers to John Isner’s booming serves as his countryman managed to beat him in three sets.

However, McDonald is yet to play a match on clay, which could prove to be disadvantageous for him as acclimatization is vital, if one is to do well on the red dirt.

Lajovic v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Despite his poor form, Lajovic will be the overwhelming favourite to win this match and he should win it in three sets, if not in straight sets.

Tip: Lajovic to win: 4/7 (bet365)
