Elina Svitolina v Jil Teichmann Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came at the 2020 Strasbourg Open, with Svitolina winning that quarterfinal match in straight sets.

Svitolina Hoping to Better Madrid Showing

In the six attempts she has made here, Svitolina has never made it past the second round of Madrid Open.

On three of the occasions, the world number five has entered second round while having lost her openers in three other editions. Svitolina will look to turn that poor record around this time.

And while she was knocked out in the semifinal of the clay-court-based Stuttgart Open last week, Svitolina would be super proud of the way she played. It was a tough draw which saw her facing Angelique Kerber in her second round match before she took on Petra Kvitova in her quarterfinal.

She defeated Kerber 7-6 (4), 6-3, and then overcame a set deficit against Kvitova to turn the tables on her Czech opponent.

Even in the semifinal, taking on the world number one Ash Barty, Svitolina grabbed the first set and was in a good position in the second before the top-ranked player managed a comeback victory.

So while Svitolina faces a tricky opening opponent here, she would be confident coming into this Madrid Open opener.

Teichmann Opens Clay Campaign

After back to back opening round defeats to kick off this season, Teichmann looked to have turned things around with her performances in the ensuing three.

She first made it to the quarterfinal at the Phillip Island Trophy and then reached the semifinal in both the Adelaide International and the WTA Dubai competition. Wins over Petra Kvitova, Cori Gauff, Ons Jabeur and Anastasija Sevastova among others meant she belonged to the upper echelons of women’s tennis despite being ranked 40th in the world at the moment.

Teichmann hasn’t played on clay since her French Open ouster last season though, and that would be the biggest obstacle for the Swiss player coming into this competition.

To surmount a player of the quality of Svitolina is tough enough but to do that with no competitive matches on clay will make it doubly difficult.

Svitolina v Teichmann Prediction and Tip

A straightforward win is what the bookmakers are predicting here, with Svitolina at 1/3 to win this but we might see bit of a fight from Teichmann. The games market looks like a good option.

Tip: Svitolina to win AND Over 19.5 games: 8/5 (bet365)
