Kudermetova at Career-Best Ranking

For a player who has found so much success on hard court surfaces, Kudermetova’s transformation into a solid clay court player this season has been amazing. She has featured in two tournaments and enters this one in Madrid on the back of a 9-1 win-loss record.

It started at the Charleston Open where Kudermetova didn’t drop a set on her way to winning the title. It was her second WTA title and first on clay.

She followed it up with wins over Bernarda Pera, Kaia Kanepi and Ana Bogdan at the Istanbul Open before she fell to Elise Mertens but not before she had won nine matches in a row.

Earlier this year, Kudermetova had also made it as far as the final of the Abu Dhabi Open before going down to Aryna Sabalenka but all of these results have been an indicator of a turnaround in fortunes for the Russian. Can she make it count at this competition where she would be playing her first main draw match?

Vesnina Returns to the Tour

Vesnina is a former doubles Grand Slam winner, having claimed four major titles in women’s and mixed doubles but had taken a break from the sport. She now returns to singles tennis having earlier featured in doubles tennis this season after been away for nearly three years.

There isn’t much to go by in singles tennis for Vesnina but having played doubles on clay with her partner Vera Zvonareva, the Russian would be anything but rusty. The bigger question for her would be how she adapts to singles play.

If one has to look at her past results, there’s enough to suggest Vesnina could prove to be a handful once she gets going.

With three career singles titles including one at Indian Wells Open and three finals on clay, the Russian will walk in knowing it would be matter of getting into some rhythm and she could challenge some of the top 100 players in the world.

Kudermetova v Vesnina Prediction and Tip

The odds are overwhelmingly in favour of Kudermetova for obvious reasons (1/12) but that also gives one a chance with Vesnina’s doubles foray earlier this year ensuring she might not be as rusty as otherwise.

Tip: Games Handicap Vesnina +6.5: 10/11 (bet365)
