Rybakina and Tomljanovic have never faced off before this in a competitive match.

Rybakina Struggling to Get Going

After the kind of seasons she had in 2019 and 2020, Rybakina would be desperately looking for some sort of a turnaround from how things have transpired this year.

Rybakina had a couple of titles over the last two seasons and made it to the final of a multiple others around the same time-frame. Unfortunately for her, the results have taken a u-turn since then and wins have been few and far between.

In fact, of the 13 matches that Rybakina has played so far, she has won just six in 2021. Three of them had come at the Abu Dhabi Open, the first competition of the season, following which she has lost seven of the next 10.

This includes a retirement from the Charleston Open opener against Caty McNally because of a gastrointestinal illness. Can she now turn things around in the middle of a brutally levelling season?

Tomljanovic Showing Good Signs on Clay

Ranked 78th in the world, Australia’s Tomljanovic has made it to the main draw of this competition with back to back straight-set wins in the qualifiers. She started off with a victory over Mona Barthel before dispatching Xiyu Wang in the second.

Even before this, Tomljanovic did well in both the clay court tournaments in Charleston – well with respect to her record on clay otherwise. She managed wins over Marie Bouzkova and Christina McHale in the first and made it to the second round of the later one.

Earlier this year, the Aussie won her openers at four of the competitions she participated in on hard court surfaces but wasn’t able to do much beyond that.

Back to back wins in Charleston would have given her bit of a boost for this one in Madrid but with just one win in this tournament all career, it seems more likely she would need her opponent’s poor form to help her come out of this one.

Rybakina v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

It’s anyone’s match according to the bookmakers with both players starting out at 10/11 to clinch this and we will be going in with the class of Rybakina over her lack of form.

Tip: Rybakina to win: 10/11 (bet365)
