Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these players with both having won one apiece. Both matches were played last season, with Pegula winning at the Cincinnati Open and Sabalenka levelling things off at the French Open.

Sabalenka Continues to Roll

Sabalenka’s performances have long suggested it should be a matter of time before she breaks into a solid showing in Grand Slams as well. And that was again on display when she dispatched Daria Kasatkina in her second round victory, recording a 6-3, 6-3 victory over her Russian opponent.

Having dropped just three games in her opening match against Vera Zvonareva, Sabalenka was our pick for a straight-set win as well and that took her a mere hour and 21 minutes to achieve.

Kasatkina was hit hard before she had even settled into the contest as Sabalenka raced off to a 5-1 lead with two breaks of serve. In turn she was forced to save two break-points and while she failed to do that in the seventh game, Sabalenka served out at 5-3.

The second set saw the Russian get the first chance to break but once she had missed that in the second game, Sabalenka took a 3-1 lead with a break. She could have broken twice more, in the fifth and seventh games, before completing the formalities in the ninth off the first match-point she got.

Sabalenka had earlier made it to the final of the Stuttgart Open and has already won a title on hard-court earlier this year.

Pegula Profits from Azarenka Pullout

A lower back injury for Victoria Azarenka meant she had to withdraw from her second round match in Madrid, allowing Pegula the luxury of a rare third round berth in a competition on clay.

With a career win-loss record of 6-9 on this surface before this tournament, Pegula had started off as a second favourite in her second round encounter against Azarenka. This was after she had edged out Sorana Cirstea in her opener, having begun on level pegging as far as bookmaker odds are concerned for that match.

Not too many would doubt Pegula’s class and form for the season. The American had begun the season ranked 64th in the world and even that had been an improvement from her 83rd last season.

And a quarterfinal at the Australian Open and a semifinal appearance in Dubai meant she had risen to her career-best of 32nd before settling in at 33rd before this competition.

Now comes a big test though given Sabalenka’s form and one senses a win here or even a battling performance could prove to be a turning point in Pegula’s clay court career.

Sabalenka v Pegula Prediction and Tip

No surprises who is the favourite and we have to back a Sabalenka, straight-set win for this one.
