Long-Awaited Return for Thiem

It has been one of the mysteries of recent men’s tennis, the manner in which Thiem’s form fell away and the way he has been out of tennis for a couple of months now. Thiem himself has spoken about the need to take that break to give himself a chance to go deep into the competition at French Open.

The last time Thiem played, it was at ATP Dubai and the Austrian fell in the very first match of the tournament, a second round defeat at the hands of Lloyd Harris. That he lost in straight sets only added to the mystery and soon after he took a break from the sport.

Earlier this season, Thiem hadn’t had the best pf results anyway.

He had won just one match at ATP Cup, and that win had come against the struggling Benoit Paire. A fourth round loss at Australian Open followed soon after before the twin defeats in Doha and Dubai.

Can he now kick-start the clay court season with a comfortable win? Clay is Thiem’s favourite surface with 10 of his 17 titles having come on this.

Qualifier Giron Stuns Andujar

Pablo Andujar is a solid competitor on clay and had gone into his opening round match against Giron at 1/2 odds to win the encounter.

Giron, however, fought tooth and nail, needed a couple of tie-breakers, three sets and nearly three and a half hours to get past his Spanish opponent and seal just his second main draw career win on clay.

The difference between the two players, in the end, turned out to be one extra break for Giron that came in the 11th game of the final set. He then had one match-point while serving and converted that to finish off the encounter.

Earlier, Giron blew away a 5-1 lead in the tie-breaker in the first set when he lost five points in a row to award his opponent a set point. Andujar won the opening set off the fourth set-point he got.

Another tie-breaker followed which Giron won this time before a titanic final set battle helped him make it through to second round.

Thiem v Giron Prediction and Tip

Thiem is refreshed, he claims, but it will need to be seen how he goes. He starts 1/6 favourite to win this and we will be backing him here but rustiness will be a factor and the games handicap should help in turn.
