Garin Breezes Past Spanish Veteran

Garin, the winner of the Chile Open in Santiago in March, made a confident start to his campaign in Madrid with a comfortable win over the Spanish wildcard and veteran Fernando Verdasco.

The tone for the match was set early on, when Garin broke the Spaniard in his opening service game. He then consolidated that with a further break. Verdasco briefly had hopes when, with Garin serving for the set, he forced three break points.

However, he could not take any of them, and the Chilean duly closed out the set.

The Spaniard held on to his serve , despite strong pressure in the opening game of the second set, but it was merely delaying the inevitable. In the ninth game he was broken to love, and, although he had a chance to break back next game, Garin served out, securing the win on his third match point.

Koepfer Enjoys Routine Win over American

Koepfer began his own campaign in Madrid, with an ultimately routine win over the American Reilly Opelka, the world number 46, a man much more at home on a hard court, who was playing in his first clay court competition of 2021.

The first set was dominated by serve until the ninth game, when Koepfer forced the first break point, which he then ruthlessly converted, duly serving out next game for the set.

The second set began with the American saving a break point, and then he gave himself hope by breaking the German in his next game. Unfortunately for Opelka, he immediately surrendered the break back again, and the match settled down again to a service battle, until Opelka fatally dropped his serve to love.

Koepfer needed no second opportunity, and closed out the match.

Garin v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

Garin will start a clear favourite to win this match as a clay court specialist. Koepfer should present comparatively little difficulty to a man bidding to reach the third round in Madrid for the first time.
