Ruud Sends Auger-Aliassime Packing

There wasn’t much to choose between Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime when the pair met in their opening round encounter here in Madrid. The way Ruud demolished his opponent though makes him one of the players to watch out in this competition.

Ruud won 6-1, 6-4 in a match lasting a little over an hour and a half, but more vitally, the Norwegian was rarely in trouble throughout this first round encounter.

In fact, other than the first game of the opening set, Ruud never saw a deuce on his own serve and never had to face a break-point while Auger-Aliassime was broken three times of the nine opportunities Ruud had.

The Canadian did put up some sort of a fight in the second set when he staved off a couple of break-points to take a 3-2 lead on serve but once Ruud broke him in the seventh game, there was no looking back. Ruud missed out on a couple of match-points on his opponent’s serve before delivering a win on his own to clinch the match in straight sets.

This follows back to back semifinal appearances at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Munich Open for Ruud.

Nishioka Finally Wins a Match

The Japanese player has had a rough start to the season and coming into this tournament for the first time in his career, lucky loser Nishioka managed to win just his third match of the season.

Nishioka, whose previous two wins this year came in Singapore, had played five other competitions including the ATP Cup to kick-start the season but won no matches.

Which is why it looked like the same would repeat when he lost in his second qualifying round and then was pitted to face Filip Krajinovic in his opener after the withdrawal of Milos Raonic from the competition.

Instead, Nishioka stunned Krajinovic 6-2, 6-4 to claim a second round spot and set up a meeting against Ruud in a mere hour and 19 minutes. He will now need to up the ante drastically though to give himself a chance as Ruud will be a a far more difficult opponent to take down.
