Jennifer Brady v Zhang Shuai Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these two players and both have been won by Zhang Shuai. The first of those matches came in 2017 in Hong Kong on hard court and Brady then won on grass in Nottingham two years later.

Brady Adjusting to Life after Maiden Grand Slam Final

She was ranked outside the top 100 in 2019 but in a matter of less than two seasons, Brady has jumped up to 14th in the world. And all of a sudden all eyes are on her to now dish out one superlative performance after another.

Which is what Brady did when she reached the final at this year’s Australian Open but since then her form has tapered off a little.

Brady was knocked out in the opening rounds at both, the WTA Doha and Miami Open and when she switched over to the clay court of Stuttgart Open, the American fell to a straight-set defeat at the hands of Petra Kvitova.

Fortunately for Brady, she did start off with a solid showing in Madrid earlier this. Wins over Venus Williams and Jelena Ostapenko came in straight sets and while she fell to a shock loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Brady would be chuffed about the fight she put up.

Can she prepare herself for a deep run at the season’s second Grand Slam with one here in Rome?

Shuai Hoping to Emulate 2014 Showing

Shuai will have a task on her hand if she is looking to equal her showing from 2014 when she reached the quarterfinal at this event.

She was a lot younger at that time and aiming to break into the top 20 and while she continues to hover around the 40th rank on the WTA charts, Zhang has made a miserable start to this season.

The Chinese woman ended the previous season with back to back defeats and has now played five matches this year and lost all five. Which means she enters this competition on the back of seven successive defeats with not a set won this season.

Some of those defeats have been on expected lines – to Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens in Stuttgart and Madrid respectively – but there have been other losses to Ann Li, Andrea Petkovic and Leyla Fernandez which all point to her struggles.

And she now takes on a player in form, who despite not having the best record on clay, should hold the upper hand here.

Brady v Shuai Prediction and Tip

One-way traffic is the only way to describe this one with Brady starting out a 1/4 facvourite to win this while Zhang at 5/2. At best we could see Zhang pushing it over 18 games in the match but not too much longer than that.

Tip: Brady to win AND Over 18.5 games in the match: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
