Putintseva Coming off Early Madrid Exit

Things looked to be going Putintseva’s way when she was able to make it to the quarterfinal of the Charleston Open despite losing the first set of her match against Garbine Muguruza 6-0.

An injury to the Spaniard gave her a walkover and when she won the first set of her second round match against Danka Kovinic, it seemed like the first semifinal of the season was on the cards for Putintseva.

Unfortunately for her, she lost the next two sets to Kovinic and followed it up with a first round defeat at the hands of Johanna Konta in Madrid. That she lost to a player whose form has been flat all season and did that in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, looked to be an indicator things weren’t going as right as they had seemed a few days prior.

And now that she starts off against a talented youngster with a propensity to take advantage of weaknesses, the 2020 quarterfinalist will need to find a way out of this mini-slump.

Gauff With the Same Result

It’s interesting to note that Gauff, who is ranked just five places behind Putintseva, is coming off a not-so-different result than her Kazakh opponent.

Gauff had also made it as far as the quarterfinal in Charleston where she lost to Ons Jabeur in straight sets and then fell to Karolina Pliskova in a fighting three-setter in the first round of Madrid Open.

That said, Gauff has had a solid start to the season, which in turn has propelled her to her career-best 35th rank in the world. After falling in the second round at the Australian Open, Gauff had qualified to make it to the Adelaide International where she managed to make it as far as the semifinal.

And that was followed by a quarterfinal appearance in Dubai next.

While clay isn’t her most preferred surface, she would definitely want to test Putintseva in this opener at Rome, a competition where she has only won one previous match.

Putintseva v Gauff Prediction and Tip

It’s interesting to note Gauff is 2/5 to win this but we believe Putintseva would prove to be more than a handful. Expect her to a win a set.
