Dimitrov Knocked Out Early in Madrid

Ranked 17th in the world, it has been a solid season for Dimitrov so far. There was a quarterfinal at the Australian Open before he went down to Aslan Karatsev, and another couple of similar appearances at the Murray River Open and Acapulco Open as well.

He then opened his clay swing for the season with a third round appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he then fell to Rafael Nadal.

Unfortunately for him, the confidence from all those results didn’t help him with his first round showing in Madrid where starting out as a 9/25 favourite against Lloyd Harris, Dimitrov lost a tough, three-setter.

What Dimitrov would now like is to try and emulate his performance in Rome last season. He made it as far as the quarterfinals there, which included a win over Jannik Sinner after being a set down. A qualifier first up should help him shrug off the Madrid loss.

Fokina in His Sixth Clay Tournament of 2021

Ranked 49th in the world, Fokina was the second seed in the qualifiers at the competition, and he made it through to the main draw rather easily. He started off with a win over Flavio Cobolli, a player ranked 450th in the world and then eased past a more pedigreed opponent than that in the form of Corentin Moutet.

This was the first time he featured in the qualifiers this season, and having passed that with flying colours, Fokina will now hope he can emulate some of his previous performances from 2021.

Like when he reached the semifinal in Estoril late in April or the quarterfinal in Monte-Carlo with wins over Alex De Minaur and Matteo Berrettini.

He now faces a difficult opponent first up but also one who hasn’t had the best of times on clay, making this an intriguing battle.

Dimitrov v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov starts off at 4/6 to win this, while Fokina is 6/5 indicating how closely matched they are at the moment on clay. Cannot discount an upset victory here.
