Maria Sakkari v Polona Hercog Head to Head

Sakkari has a losing record against Polona Hercog (0-1), falling to the Slovenian in straight sets in the semifinals of Istanbul in 2018.

Sakkari Beaten By Muchova in Madrid

Maria Sakkari lost in three sets to Karolina Muchova at the Madrid Masters. More worryingly for the Greek, she gave away two 6-0 sets during the week in the Spanish capital.

Sakkari, having overcome Amanda Anisimova 0-6 6-1 6-4 in the opening round, came unstuck against the Czech who had conquered Naomi Osaka in the previous round.

The 25-year-old is yet to hit the ground running on her claycourt campaign with her other participation coming in Stuttgart. There, she was beaten in three sets by Petra Kvitova.

Sakkari will attempt to address her recent slide in Rome, a city in which she reached the semifinal in 2019 as a qualifier. After a promising opening quarter, where the counterpunching Greek made two semifinals: in Abu Dhabi and Miami, along with a quarterfinal showing in Doha, another deep run at a WTA 1000 event would be a major respite just before the French Open.

Hercog Holds Off Errani to Reach Main Draw

Polona Hercog made a huge statement in the qualifying draw, with straight-set wins over Italian hopefuls Lucia Bronzetti and Sara Errani to book her spot in the main draw.

Hercog dominated Errani on Sunday afternoon in a 6-2 6-3 win. She was all over the Italian veteran’s weak serve, winning 50% of return points behind both the first and second deliveries, and broke serve five times. With it, came a reward in the main draw at Foro Italico for the fourth successive time.

The tattooed Slovenian has had a tumultuous time on the main tour, failing to nail down a spot in the top-tier events. With a current ranking of World No. 73, Hercog has enjoyed success lately on the second-tier tournaments. She won the Oeiras ITF event in Portugal last month.

However, she is yet to win a match at tour-level since beating Margarita Gasparyan in the opening round of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne.

Sakkari v Hercog Prediction and Tip

Hercog’s barren spell at tour-level should continue. Granted she won an ITF event on clay a month ago, a meeting against an in-form Sakkari is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 8/13 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
