Rafael Nadal v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at French Open last season where Nadal won that quarterfinal encounter in straight sets. Sinner did push the Spaniard in the opening set, taking it to a tie-breaker but after that it turned out to be a cakewalk for Nadal.

Nadal Looking to Shrug Off Madrid Shocker

Nadal would be smarting under his quarterfinal loss at the hands of Alexander Zverev last week, with the Spaniard losing another clay court match that early in the competition.

Earlier in the season, his back looked to have caused a few issues but his fitness hasn’t been too much of an issue in recent times, which is why for the Spaniard to still lose at the quarterfinal stage in both Monte-Carlo (to Andrey Rublev) and Madrid would sting.

A bye in the first round of the Italian Open will now be followed by a very stiff challenge in the form of Sinner.

With a 14th French Open title on the line later this month, Nadal’s preparations on clay haven’t been the best but in a way it would do Nadal a world of good if he can get past the talented opponent he is facing this early in the tournament.

Sinner Brushes Past Humbert

If one thought Ugo Humbert would cause Sinner any problems in their opening round match at this year’s Rome Masters, they were wildly off the mark. Sinner completed a 6-2, 6-4 win over his 32nd-ranked opponent, needing less than an hour and a half to ensure he had sealed his place in the second round.

Sinner, a semifinalist at the Barcelona Open earlier this year, broke in the third game of the opening set and then consolidated with another one in the fifth to race through the opening set.

He faced bit of a resistance in the second when he lost his serve in the second game but back to back breaks followed before he served it out to complete a straight-set win.

The Italian, like Nadal, hadn’t had the best time in Madrid as he lost early to Alexei Popyrin but the manner in which he has begun here and given his opponent’s less-than-extraordinary showings, Sinner could give himself a chance.

Nadal v Sinner Prediction and Tip

While we have spoken about Nadal’s recent issues and Sinner’s solid talent, we believe the Spaniard will up the ante when it matters and carve out a straight-set win here.
