Sonego Knocks Out Monfils

This is the third time that the 25-year old has reached the second round of his home Masters’ event.

And he got there this time with a fighting display against the world number 15 Gael Monfils.

The first set saw both men struggle on serve, Monfils the first to drop his, followed by Sonego, and then the Frenchman again. Monfils briefly levelled but promptly dropped his serve once more, and Sonego held out to take the first set.

Sonego seemed in control when he broke Monfils again early in the second set, but his opponent hit back, breaking to level,

Both men had more chances to break but, in the end, it was the Italian who cracked, enabling Monfils to take it to a third set.

It was Sonego who took early control of the proceedings with another break, but he could not hold onto the advantage and the match was soon all square once more.

However, in the ninth game he forced three more break points and converted the third, before serving out to love.

Wildcard Mager Scores Impressive First Round Win

Mager was given a wildcard in Rome, having failed to qualify in Madrid  last week.’

He took though, full advantage of the opportunity he had been given with an impressive first round win over Alex de Minaur of Australia, the world 23.

It was the Italian who drew first blood, breaking early, but de Minaur was soon on level terms. However, the ninth game of the first set saw Mager force a series of break points,  finally converting one of them to nose ahead again. He served out for the set next game.

De Minaur started the second set well, and took a two game lead before Mager hit back, not only levelling the set but moving a break ahead.

From there the Italian just controlled the match, keeping de Minaur at arm’s length. In the end, the Australian serving to stay in the match gave Mager a match point. The Italian missed that one, but not the one that arrived a few moments later.

As the higher ranked player, Sonego will begin the favourite to reach the third round of this event for the first time in his career.
