Garin Falls to Bautista Agut in Rome

Cristian Garin targets another deep run at an ATP 250 event, and this feels like the kind of surroundings he is more adept at producing his best tennis.

Garin is a renowned clay courter from Chile and has won five titles already on the surface – the last of which came on home soil in Santiago two months ago. He is looking to translate his success on the Golden Swing to the European clay.

So far, he has performed admirably despite the lack of consistency in his results. He made the Round of 16 in Monte Carlo, losing to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters. But defeats in Barcelona and Estoril proved cases in point.

The Chilean arrives in Geneva on the back of a second-round showing in Rome, where he was beaten in straight sets by Roberto Bautista Agut.

Fucsovics Pushed Thiem in Rome

Marton Fucsovics has a modest record on clay among the ATP’s top 50 players. It was a major surprise that he managed to push Dominic Thiem hard in Rome.

Fucsovics took a set off the US Open champion in their second-round match at Foro Italico, but he did not have the legs to outmaneuver the Austrian when the match went the distance.

Still, the Hungarian should take plenty of confidence from that encounter as he gears to return to the scene of his only previous ATP title triumph.

The World No. 44 won the 2018 edition of Geneva Open, beating a formidable lineup that included Albert Ramos Vinolas, Frances Tiafoe, and Stan Wawrinka. He was almost unplayable that week, streaking to the title by beating Peter Gojowczyk in the final, 6-2 6-2.

However, his penchant for clay has waned in recent seasons.

Garin v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Fucsovics is a former champion at this event and is coming off a strong start to the season on hard courts. But this is a difficult matchup for him against a player who was born to play on this surface. We are backing Garin to get back to winning ways in this one.
