Putintseva on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Putintseva did make it to the quarterfinals at the Charleston Open but that stint could well have ended a match earlier when she was bagelled in the first set by Garbine Muguruza. That she made it through to the next stage was down to her opponent’s retirement from that encounter.

Unfortunately for Putintseva, that first set against Muguruza looked to have rattled her confidence hard as she suffered three successive defeats after that.

It began with a defeat to Danka Kovinic at Charleston itself and was followed by a straight-set loss at the hands of Johanna Konta in Madrid. Not before long she was playing in Rome where pitted against Cori Gauff, Putintseva fell to a three-set loss at the hands of the American.

Putintseva is coming off a mediocre season otherwise with a third round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open and the Australian Open respectively being her best showing before the Charleston campaign.

Can she shrug off her poor form recently and break the losing streak?

Clay-Courter Juvan Could Prove a Handful

Juvan has won seven lower level tournaments in her career and each one of them has come on clay. Add four more finals on clay which she didn’t win and that is why, despite having started off poorly on the clay court swing, Juvan wouldn’t be a pushover coming into this opener.

The 101st-ranked Juvan kick-started her clay campaign at the Madrid Open where she was knocked out of the qualifiers in the very first round. Turning her attention to the La Bisbal tournament on the ITF circuit, Juvan then fell in the first round there as well.

Earlier in the season, Juvan had made it to the Australian Open as a qualifier and then stormed into the third round of the season’s first major. That made it Juvan’s best ever performance at a Grand Slam, having never gotten past second round before that.

Can she now push her opponent to her fourth successive defeat?
