Strong Clay Season For Ruud

It has been a strong clay season for Casper Ruud where the 22-year-old reached a career high ranking of world number 16.  While 2020 was a strong year for the Norwegian where he won his first ATP title at the Argentina Open and made the top 25 in the world, this season has been one better on that.

Ruud started the clay swing with a quarter-final showing at the Andalucia Open but upped it a notch at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he was a semi-finalist defeating the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Fabio Fognini and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Another strong showing at the Madrid Masters with victories over Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Bublik made for another semi-final before a close loss to Matteo Berrettini.

Ruud skipped the Italian Open after the fatigue of the last few weeks, but is back in Geneva as the number two seed this week and one of the favorites even with Roger Federer in the draw, such has been his dominance on the clay.

Poor Clay Run For Sandgren So Far

It was not the best of starts to the season for the American Sandgren having won just two rounds before clay- the opener at the Great Ocean Road at the start of the year and another one at the Miami Open against the 100th-ranked Pedro Martinez.

His clay season included participation at Barcelona, Munich, Madrid and Rome where he only qualified for Munich and was eliminated in the first round.

An opening round win at Geneva was his first win this on clay against Italian Salvatore Carusso. Given that Carusso is a natural on the clay, the nature of the win will do well for the American’s confidence. However, he will be aware that the task against Ruud is now uphill and it will be difficult to make inroads against him on the clay.

Ruud v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

This makes for a lopsided clash on clay, with Ruud in prime form this swing and Sandgren yet to find his feet. Expect a smooth straight sets win for Ruud.
