Tsitsipas Eases Past Nishioka

Monte-Carlo Masters champion Stefanos Tsitsipas inched closer to a fourth ATP final after he ousted Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals of the Lyon Open on Friday.

The Greek, who dropped just eight service points in the match, needed an hour and seven minutes to dispatch the World No. 60, 6-3, 6-4. Tsitsipas won 83% of service points and converted two of five break points to improve to 31-8 in 2021.

The 22-year-old, who received a first-round bye, was dominant in his Round of 16 match as well, as he defeated America’s Tommy Paul 6-1, 6-4.

In what has been a fantastic year for the Greek right-hander so far, Tsitsipas reached a third Grand Slam semifinal and a second at the Australian Open by beating Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals in Melbourne, but yet again failed to reach a major final after going down to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

He followed his Australian Open exploits with a run to the semifinals in Rotterdam, where he was beaten by Andrey Rublev in straight sets, and then was shocked by Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the quarterfinals in Marseille.

The six-time ATP winner reached his first final of the year in Acapulco, beating Musetti in semis, but finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev. He could reach only as far as the quarterfinals in Miami, before capturing his first title of the year in Monte-Carlo by beating Rublev 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

The following week at the Barcelona Open, Tsitsipas found his way to a 15th career final, but failed to stop Rafael Nadal from winning his 12th Barcelona title.

In his last two tournaments, Tsitsipas was dumped out of Madrid by Casper Ruud in the Round of 16 and beaten by Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in Rome.

Musetti Into Second Semifinal of the Year

Facing Tsitsipas in the semifinals will be 19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who knocked out Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The World No. 88 needed an hour and 35 minutes to defeat the World No. 55, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Winning 65% of service points, Musetti saved 2 of 4 break points and converted 3 of 5 to reach a second semifinal in 2021.

He had reached the semifinals as a qualifier in Acapulco, defeating Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov in the first three rounds. However, he couldn’t find a way past Tsitsipas in the semis, going down 1-6, 3-6.

Musetti also reached the last eight in Cagliari, but was beaten by Laslo Djere in three.

The Italian, who improved to 12-6 in 2021 following the win against Bedene, had defeated seventh seed Felix Auger Aliassime 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-5 in the first round in Lyon. He had to deal with another three-setter in the Round of 16, as he knocked out America’s Sebastian Korda 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

The 19-year-old will be hoping to reach his first ATP final on Saturday.
