Venus Williams v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players, one of which came in 2010 and the remaining two in 2018 and in the second round of hard court competitions. Venus Williams won all three, defeating Cirstea in Miami, Indian Wells and Montreal in straight sets.

Venus on Four-Match Losing Streak

Things have continued to go from bad to worse on court for Venus who has now lost four matches in a row this season. Overall, she has won just two and lost five encounters in 2021, and on clay this season, it’s 0-2 for the American.

The legend that is Venus has been on the decline for a while, especially from her lofty standards which had seen her win seven Grand Slam titles. But even without those major wins, Venus was winning WTA titles till 2016 following which things turned around for the worse.

So much so that in 2020 Venus won just one match at the highest level and lost eight. Interestingly her only win came at the Lexington Open against Victoria Azarenka, who would go on to win the Cincinnati Open and finish runnerup at the US Open only a month later.

Can Venus turn things around and get a few wins under her belt, starting with one against a player she has never lost to before?

Cirstea 5-1 on Clay This Year

Cirstea has played two clay court competitions in this season and has endured vastly contrasting fortunes in the two.

Starting out at the Istanbul Open, Cirstea won her first WTA title in 13 years and second of the career when she toppled Elise Mertens in the final. Then, however, facing Jessica Pegula in the first round of the Madrid Open less than a week later, Cirstea was bundled out of the competition in straight sets.

These result comes in sharp contrast to her performance in 2020 when she played in two clay court competitions as well but lost the openers at both. In fact, coming into the Istanbul Open, Cirstea was 0-5 on red dirt spread across two seasons before she finally won a match.

Turned out to be a tournament-winning spree.

Earlier this season, Cirstea had also had a strong start on hard courts, with back to back wins registered at the Grampians Trophy and the Australian Open.

Venus v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Over the last seven tournaments, every time Cirstea has won a match she has gone on to win a tournament! Jokes aside, the Romanian should start off with the confidence of being able to win her first match against Venus.
