Yoshihito Nishioka v Sam Querrey Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the quarter-final of a hard court event in Memphis in 2016, Querrey winning in straight sets.

Nishioka Hoping to Live up to Recent Results

Japanese number two Nishioka has been in two senior ATP finals both in hard court events, winning the Shenzhen Open in 2018, and slipping to defeat two years later in Delray Beach.

He is not known as a clay court player – he has never been beyond the second round in Paris – but he did win four tournaments in the surface in his days on the junior circuits.

Nishioka began the European clay court season by qualifying for Madrid, and he went on to reach the second round before losing to Casper Ruud.

Again, he had to qualify in Rome, but he could not get beyond the first round stage three, beaten by Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.

However, he did better last week in Lyon, where he recorded a good win over Gael Monfils, before bowing out at the third round stage to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Querrey Playing First Clay Court Match of 2021

Querrey is known for his big serving – he holds the record for the most consecutive aces in a singles match.

That means that clay does not suit his natural game, although he did win the Serbia Open in 2010, and was a runner-up in the US Men’s Clay Court Championship six years later.

However, the fact that he has only once got to the third round in Paris indicates that his strengths lie elsewhere.

He has played very little tennis since the Australian Open, where he was beaten in the first round by Lorenzo Sonego of Italy.

The only event he has entered since then was the Miami Masters, where he suffered another first round defeat, this time to the Taiwanese, world 679, Yen Hsun Lu.

This will be his first match of the year on clay.

Nishioka v Querrey Prediction and Tip

Although Querrey won their previous match, that was on a hard court.

The American has played very little this year, and it is a big ask to expect him to play his first clay court match of the year and immediately adapt to the conditions and the speed of the court. Nishioka would appear to have most of the cards up his sleeve.
