Gianluca Mager v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in a Challenger event in Ortisei in Italy in 2019 on a hard court, Musetti winning in straight sets.

Mager, Clay Court Specialist

Unlike his opponent, Mager has been in the final of a senior event on the ATP tour, beaten by Christian Garin of Chile in the Rio Open last February, before lockdown.

He is predominantly a clay court player, as evidenced by his record ion the junior tours – 14 of his 15 finals were in clay and six of his seven successes

One of those victories was in a Challenger event in Marbella only last month.

Mager failed to qualify for Monte Carlo, but did much better in the first iteration of the Belgrade Open – not only did he qualify but he went on to reach the third round, recording good wins over Laslo Djere and Alexei Popyrin on the way, before falling to Aslan Karatsev.

However, Mager failed to qualify for Madrid and lost in the second round in Rome to compatriot Lorenzo Sonego.

Italian Teenager Musetti on the Rise

Musetti, a former junior world number one, won the Australian Open boys’ single title in 2019 and, earlier this year, made history when he became the youngest player to break into the top 100 by reaching the semi-finals of the Mexican Open in Acapulco.

In the process he recorded his first ever win over a top ten player, defeating Diego Schwartzman.

The teenager maintained the momentum by reaching the third round in Miami and Sardinia, but suffered a first round defeat in Monte Carlo to Aslan Karatsev.

He did better in Barcelona, reaching the second round, but failed to qualify for Madrid, and was given a wildcard for his home Masters’ event in Rome, where he notched up another good win over Hubert Hurkasz, before he was blown away by the big serving of Reilly Opelka.

However, he underlined his burgeoning talent with another run to the semi-finals in Lyon last week, before eventually losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas, but not before taking the first set off the Greek.
