After a rather slow start on clay for the season, Gasquet looked to have finally come into his own when he reached the quarterfinal of the Lyon Open last week.
And that result came on the back of wins against fellow Frenchman Gregoire Barrere and Argentine clay-court specialist Diego Schwartzman. The second of those results was a big shock after Gasquet had come into the encounter with 11/4 odds for his win.
That Gasquet defeated the world number 10 in straight came out to be an even more pleasant surprise for him.
Earlier, the Frenchman had already lost in opening rounds at Barcelona and Rome following on from a first round exit at the Murray River Open.
With his recent results having shown a sign of deterioration, Gasquet has fallen from his 2019-best ranking of 26th in the world to his current 52nd. With Gasquet having made the quarterfinal of the French Open in 2016, a solid performance here will go a long way in helping him take some confidence for a performance similar to that one five years ago.

Qualifier Altmaier Yet to Break into Top 120
For a player who has won nine Futures titles since 2016, Altamaier’s struggles in any competition above that level has been surprising. As a result he has never broken into the top 120, with a career-best ranking of 122 and a current ranking of 144 in the world.
And yet, here he is, playing in the main draw of an ATP tournament, having qualified for it with back to back victories in the qualifiers in Parma.
He started with an expected win against Pavel Kotov but starting out at 4/3 odds to win the encounter against Norbert Gombos in the second round of the qualifiers, Altamaier turned out a better performance than his opponent’s to win in two gruelling tie-breakers.
This will be Altamaier’s second successive main draw appearance after having missed out throughout the rest of the season.
