Barbora Krejcikova v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

Garcia won their only previous meeting in Bastad in 2017, winning the quarterfinal 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Krejcikova Advances after Dodin Withdraws

World No. 38 Barbora Krejcikova eased into the second round in Strasbourg after her French opponent Oceane Dodin retired from the contest while trailing 3-6, 0-3 on Monday.

Broken once by the Frenchwoman before her retirement, Krejcikova won 93% first-serve points and converted 4 of 6 break points.

The Czech player, who is currently at a career high ranking of 38, had come into the tournament with a 14-9 record in 2021, which included a maiden appearance in the final of a WTA 1000 event, as she reached the title clash in Dubai.

The 25-year-old, who had never gone past the first round of a WTA 1o00, defeated 16th seed Maria Sakkari, Jelena Ostapenko, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Potapova and Jil Teichmann en route to the final in Dubai, but failed to win her first singles title losing to Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.

A two-time doubles Grand Slams champion and three-time mixed-doubles champion at the Australian Open, Krejcikova also reached the quarterfinals at the Grampians Trophy earlier this year.

She is 3-3 from three events on clay in 2021, with her best performance coming at the Italian Open, where she defeated Saisai Zheng and fourth seed Sofia Kenin to reach the Round of 16, but fell to Iga Swiatek in three.

Garcia Eases Past Diyas

Facing Krejcikova will be World No. 57 Caroline Garcia, who ousted Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas in straight sets on Monday.

The 27-year-old Frenchwoman was broken just once in the match, while she capitalised on four of five breaking opportunities to win the one-hour-and-21-minute contest 7-5, 6-2.

The win improved Garcia to 11-9 this year. The former World No. 4 has made it to just one quarterfinal this year, reaching the last eight in Parma last week before being halted by Katerina Siniakova.

Garcia had also won two matches at the Gippsland Trophy and two at Dubai International to reach the Round of 16 in both the events but failed to find a way past Elise Mertens in either of them, falling to the Belgian in straight sets on both the occasions.

The Frenchwoman who has reached 10 WTA finals in her career has won seven titles on the tour, including the 2016 Strasbourg Open, which she won by beating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the final. She also reached the summit clash in 2019, but finished runner-up to Dayana Yastremska.
