Dusan Lajovic v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

Chardy leads Lajovic 3-2 on the tour and 4-2, including the qualifiers.

Lajovic won the first battle in St. Petersburg in 2011 and then on the grass court of Eastbourne in 2017. Chardy has won all their clay court battles, winning in Houston in 2015, Istanbul in 2018 and Kitzbuhel in 2019. The Frenchman also beat Lajovic in the Paris Masters qualifiers in 2017.

Out of the six matches so far, the first two were decided in two sets, but the last four have been three-set contests, with Chardy winning three of them.

Lajovic Ends Losing Streak

Dusan Lajovic ended a six-match losing streak on Monday as he stormed into the second round in Belgrade with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis.

The Serbian converted all four of his break point chances and saved five of six to win the contest in an hour and 20 minutes. It was his first win on clay this year, having lost his openers at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Serbia Open, Munich Open, Madrid Open and Rome Masters.

He had last won a match in the Round of 64 at the Miami Masters, defeating America’s Ernesto Escobedo, before falling to Frances Tiafoe in the next round.

Lajovic, who won his only ATP title in Umag in 2019 and reached the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters the same year, improved to 7-13 in 2021 following Monday’s victory.

His best performance this year came at the Australian Open, where he made his maiden fourth round appearance before falling to Alexander Zverev. This was only the second time that Lajovic had reached that far at a major, having reached the Round of 6 in Roland Garros in 2014.

In what was another significant moment for him this year, the 30-year-old had knocked out Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 32 in Rotterdam.

Chardy Knocks Out Sandgren

Facing Lajovic in the second round will be France’s Jeremy Chardy, who reached the second round with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Tennys Sandgren on Monday.

The 34-year-old Chardy won 64% service points, including 81% of first serve points, and 51% return points in the match that lasted an hour and 10 minutes. Although he couldn’t save the two break points he faced in the match, he created 10 breaking chances and converted five of them.

The win improved Chardy to 15-11 overall and 4-4 on clay in 2021.

The 2009 Stuttgart champion has enjoyed a fantastic year so far. Beginning the season in Antalya, Chardy reached the semifinals by beating higher-ranked Fabio Fognini and Jan-Lennard Struff on the way. He also reached the semifinals at Melbourne-2, defeating Marin Cilic, Gilles Simon and Taylor Fritz (all ranked higher than him) and getting a walkover against Stan Wawrinka.

Chardy’s impressive season continued at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, where he reached the last eight as a qualifier, with wins over Ugo Humbert and David Goffin in the first two rounds.

He reached another ATP 500 quarterfinal in Dubai, winning against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Alex de Minaur and Karen Khachanov in the first three rounds before falling to Denis Shapovalov. Yet again all the players he beat in Dubai were ranked higher than him.

The French right-hander has not been able to replicate that hard court form on clay, struggling to win two matches in a row so far. He will be looking to break that pattern on Wednesday.

Dusan Lajovic v Jeremy Chardy Prediction and Tip

A lot of factors favour Chardy in this contest. The Frenchman has been very successful against higher-ranked opponents this season. Also, he has never lost to Lajovic on clay and has dominated their recent battles. What’s more, he has had a far better season that the Serb (even on clay). Expect Chardy to extend his lead over Lajovic with a win on Wednesday.
