Fognini is 5-6 on Clay in 2021

Italy’s Fabio Fognini comes to Paris with a 12-12 record in 2021.

The 34-year-old, who has claimed eight of his nine titles on clay, is 5-6 on the surface this year and 7-6 on hard courts.

Part of the team that finished runner-up to Russia at the ATP Cup earlier this year, Fognini reached the Round of 16 of the Australian Open for the fourth time in his career. However, the Italian’s wait of playing a first quarterfinal in Melbourne was extended by Rafael Nadal, who handed him a straight sets defeat.

Fognini, who will be playing in his 14th French Open, reached his only major quarterfinal at Roland Garros in 2011. The Italian’s marathon win against Spain’s Albert Montanes in the fourth round took such a toll on his body that he was forced to withdraw before the start of his quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic.

Fognini’s best performance on clay this year was at Monte Carlo, where he had won his only Masters 1000 title in 2019. Fognini defeated Miomir Kecmanovic, Jordan Thompson and Filip Krajinovic to reach the last eight, where he was beaten by Casper Ruud.

Last year at Roland Garros, Fognini was handed his fourth first-round defeat of the tournament, as he went down to Mikhail Kukushkin in four. The former World No. 9 will be looking to start on a winning note this year.

Barrere Will Have His Work Cut Out

Fognini will face France’s Gregoire Barrere in the first round. The 27-year-old Barrere comes into the tournament with a 1-3 record in 2021.

Ranked 122nd in the world, the Frenchman won his opener against Nikoloz Basilashvili in Montpellier but fell in the Round of 16 to Roberto Bautista Agut. The loss followed first-round defeats to Jannik Sinner in Marseille and Richard Gasquet in Lyon.

This will be Barrere’s fifth French Open, where he is 1-4 from his previous appearances. He was handed first round defeats by David Goffin in 2016 and Radu Albot in 2018, before he won his first match at Roland Garros against Matthew Ebden in 2019. He was, however, beaten by Karen Khachanov in the second round and sent packing by Grigor Dimitrov in the first round last year.

Barrere, who has been awarded a wild card for the tournament,  has 3 Challenger and 6 Futures titles. He reached the final of a Challenger in Lille earlier this year, but fell to Zizou Bergs in the final.

Fognini v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Fognini will come in as the favourite in this contest, expect him to pick up a straight sets win and setup a second round clash with either Marton Fucsovics or Gilles Simon.
