Jessica Pegula v Lin Zhu Head to Head

The two players have met just once on the WTA Tour – in the 2015 Charleston Open. Pegula won that match 6-3, 7-6(4).

Lin Zhu Battling Form Woes

Currently ranked World No. 99, Lin Zhu of China has had a less than eventful spell on the WTA Tour. With a win-loss tally of 5-9, she will be competing in French Open after a hiatus of almost two months.

Her last professional competition was an ITF $25,000 event in Dubai in March-end where she was beaten in the second round. Before that, she competed in the Qatar Open, Monterrey Open, and Miami Open but never made it past the qualifiers.

Among her best runs of the season are a second-round appearance in Monterrey Open, Phillip Island Trophy, and the Australian Open. In the process, she moved past the likes of Eugenie Bouchard and Sara Errani.

Zhu hasn’t won a trophy of any kind since 2020 January – she was the runner-up in an ITF event in Hong Kong. Even at the French Open, she never made it past the first round in any of her three appearances in Paris.

Pegula Enjoying Career-Best Season

Jessica Pegula has had a pretty good 2021 so far as she looks to capitalise on her recent success on the tour. Even though she hasn’t picked up singles titles (yet), her performance alone has propelled her into the top 30.

At the moment, she is #29 – just one shy of her career-high singles ranking. Boasting a tally of 21-8, her clay season has been decent with five wins and just three losses. The American had a brilliant time in the Madrid Open and Italian Open, reaching the third round and the quarterfinal respectively. It was also in these tournaments that she beat Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka.

Last week, however, Pegula incurred a shock defeat to Arantxa Rus in the Strasbourg Open.

That said, the 27-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers this season. In the Yarra Valley Classic, she reached the third round and followed it with a quarterfinal appearance in the Australian Open and a semifinal run in the Qatar Open. Pegula also reached the fourth-round in the WTA Dubai and Miami Open, beating Karolina Pliskova twice in those three weeks.
