Naomi Osaka v Ana Bogdan Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Osaka and Bogdan before.

Osaka Slogs Past Maria Tig

It was a straight-set win for Osaka in the end but not before she had needed a tie-breaker in the second having found it increasingly difficult to break Patricia Maria Tig in the first round.

In the end, Osaka came through 6-4, 7-6 (4) in her opener with the match lasting an hour and 48 minutes.

With Osaka having admitted clay hasn’t been her most preferred surface and having never gotten past the third round at Roland-Garros – not to mention her blanket press ban – there were more pairs of eyes than usual on her. And she looked to have started off well too when she broke her opponent in the second game to race off to a 5-2 lead.

What followed is what could bother Osaka against a more difficult opponent as she first missed out on three set-points on her opponent’s serve, and was then broken back in ninth game. Osaka did clinch the set after breaking right back but the confidence from that previous break seemed to have helped Maria Tig who then saved two break-points in the second set to force a tie-breaker.

Osaka lost her serve thrice in the tie-breaker too, pointing to her issues on the surface but did well to break back five times and carve out a spot in round two.

Bogdan with Third Win on Clay

By claiming her first round encounter against Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Bogdan registered her third win on clay in 2021, already more than Osaka’s two. Not that it matters too much but it should give Bogdan some confidence, especially given how easily she battered Cocciaretto in her opener.

In a match lasting an hour and seven minutes, Bogdan triumphed 6-1, 6-3.

Such was her dominance from start to finish, the Romanian got five chances to break her opponent, and used four of those opportunities while she had four break-points against her own serve but saved it every single time.

Bogdan had made it past the first round at Roland Garros on just two previous occasions but she has never entered round three. While she has never won a WTA title, she has 13 ITF tournament wins and six of them have come on clay.

Could be up for a scrap against the world number two.

Osaka v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

While Osaka is an overwhelming favourite on paper, starting out at 3/10, it’s tough not to see Bogdan engage her in a keen tussle and probably even win a set.

Tip: Bogdan to win a set – Yes: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
