John Isner v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

There has been one previous match between these players and it was Krajinovic who won that in the semifinal of the Paris Masters. It turned out to be a tough three-setter that went into a tie-breaker in the final set. It turned out to be Krajinovic’s only Masters 1000 final.

Isner Makes Short Work of Querrey

Not much of a clay-court player, Isner was blessed with a relatively easy opening encounter against Sam Querrey and to his credit, took full toll of it.

The world number 34 came through in straight sets, needing just an hour and 48 minutes to register the win and march into round two of a competition he has never gone beyond the fourth.

Isner slammed 22 aces as one would expect from him, but most importantly he slammed 39 winners to his 24 unforced errors to romp home. As compared to that, Querrey had a similar number of unforced errors at 25, but only nine aces and 29 winners in the encounter.

And other than the first set in which Isner was pushed into a tie-breaker, he broke his opponent once apiece in the next two to wrest the initiative.

He now takes on a player who has done well on clay in his career but coming off a poor season on the same surface.

Krajinovic 5-5 on Clay after Marterer Win

Maximilian Marterer is ranked 215th in the world to Krajinovic’s 41st but despite the disparity in the ranking, the Serb wasn’t an overwhelming favourite to win his opener.

And that was down to his own poor form coming into French Open with Krajinovic having won just four of the nine matches he had played on clay in 2021.

In the end, Krajinovic, who had made quarterfinal in Belgrade as his best showing on clay this season, did not have to worry about odds or form. He came through easily, winning 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Interestingly, much like Isner had in his match, Krajinovic faced two break-points in this one too and saved both of them with aplomb.

Which is why, we could be in for a keen tussle between two vastly different players.

Isner v Krajinovic Prediction and Tip

Krajinovic is a marginal favourite at 4/5 and on clay those are excellent odds for a player who has won all his 10 Challenger titles on this surface. Backing the Serb to win.
