Hercog Causes First Round Upset

Hercog provided one of the surprises of the French Open so far by knocking out the number ten seed, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, in the first round,

It was only the third time in her career that she had beaten a top ten players, and Bertens was one of her victims previously as well.

Bertens. who has been out of form recently, began terribly, dropping her first three service games. Hercog then dropped her serve as well, but a fourth break of serve against Bertens meant a very one-sided first set.

Thew Dutch woman though composed herself, and was soon two breaks up in the second set. Hercog got one of them back, but the Slovenian, serving to stay in the set, dropped her serve once more.

The tide seemed to have turned, especially when Hercog was broken early in the third set. But she hit back to level, and again when she was broken once more.

Bertens had a break point in the next game, could not take it, and that proved decisive, as she was broken herself next game.

Hercog, given the chance to serve out, duly took it.

Comfortable Start for Garcia in Paris

A former doubles champion at Roland Garros and a previous quarter-finalist in the singles got her latest campaign in Paris off to a comfortable start.

She was drawn against Laura Siegemund of Germany, the world 55, and many observers expected it to be a close match beforehand. In the event it proved anything but.

The first set produced just three break points, but they all came in the same game against the German, the third of which Garcia converted, serving out from there.

Both women held serve at the start of the second set, but then Siegemund suffered three consecutive breaks against her, and the German’s cause was as good as lost.

She only forced one break point against the Garcia serve in the entire match, could not take it, and was well beaten in the end.
