Medvedev Finally Wins at Roland-Garros

It has been a miserable time on clay for Medvedev and more so at the French Open but the Russian finally managed to do what he had never done before. Win a match at Roland-Garros to progress to the second!

And it wasn’t just the win that matters to be honest, it’s the manner of victory too. Medvedev did it in fine style, defeating Alexander Bublik in straight sets in a match that lasted less than two hours.

It wasn’t the brightest of starts for Medvedev when he was broken in his very first service game but he retaliated with five breaks from his opponent’s next six games to pouch the first set and take a 4-0 lead.

Bublik did break back once but failed to get a second one in, allowing Medvedev to race away to a two set lead.

The third was more keenly fought but there again Medvedev showed he had come prepared for any such eventuality. Bublik looked like he would take the match into a fourth set with a timely break in the eighth game that got him a 5-3 lead but Medvedev came back stronger to break twice, and clinch the encounter in three.

He now takes a far tougher opponent in Tommy Paul but having broken that French Open duck, he would have a lot more confidence too.

Paul in a Marathon Photo-Finish

Paul had gone into his first round match against Christopher O’Connell at 1/4 to win it and things looked to be going that way too. The American was two sets up and had broken O’Connell to take a 3-2 lead in the third set.

And then suddenly it all changed.

O’Connell broke back, and then as Paul served to stay in the set at 4-5, he was broken yet again.

His confidence having returned, O’Connell took a 2-0 lead in the fourth and while Paul broke soon after, the same sequence of events repeated as he served at 4-5 again. The match had gone into a fifth.

Paul then had a couple of break-point opportunities at 4-4, but other than that there was nothing going his way as the final set stretched to 8-8. It was only at that stage that the American finally broke his opponent, saved a break-point of his own and used up three match-points to thwart an upset.

Can he make it past the resurgent Medvedev now?

Medvedev v Paul Prediction and Tip

Medvedev is 4/11 favourite to win this and while we believe he has it in him to get past Paul, it might also need a lot more than he did against Bublik.

Tip: Medvedev to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
