Taylor Fritz v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

Fritz won both of their previous two matches, including last year’s first-round meeting at the US Open.

Fritz Eased Past Sousa

Taylor Fritz eased past Joao Sousa, 6-4 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round at Roland Garros for the third straight year. And simultaneously, he extended Sousa’s winless streak at Grand Slams (the last match win came at Wimbledon 2019).

Sousa who is a claycourt specialist has had a really disappointing time on the main tour. He has won only one main draw match all year (at the Miami Masters) and arrived in Paris with his confidence shattered.

The 32-year-old Portuguese has dropped outside the top 100 as a consequence of that poor run. He barely laid a glove on Fritz in a match that lasted 17 minutes shy of two hours. The American did not face a single breakpoint on his serve in the first two sets, and Sousa won a meagre two points behind Fritz’s first serve.

Sousa hit 12 winners in the entire match (only two in the final set) – hardly a stat to lift his spirits. While Fritz is not a natural clay courter, had so much success from the baseline and at the net. Even with 24 unforced errors in the book, the American’s 34 winners gave him a perfect launchpad for the whole afternoon.

Koepfer Keeps Bourgue at Bay

Dominik Koepfer lived up to the billing as the undisputed favorite to win his first-round match. The German knocked out French wild card Mathias Bourgue 6-3 6-4 6-4 in just over two hours.

Bourgue is synonymous for pushing Andy Murray to five sets at Roland Garros in 2016. And with a current ranking of World N0. 197, he got into the tournament courtesy of a dream wild card.

However, the Frenchman cut a forlorn figure as he was broken early on. Koepfer consolidated his lead and secured a second break to clinch the opening set.

Bourgue did not relent and it was his turn to break serve in the opening game of the second set. It took him five tries to do so but wasted himself as he failed to build on it. Koepfer wore him down with angled groundstrokes and after two quick holds, got his nose in front to lead 4-2. The German lefty eventually rounded off the set.

In the third set, the man from Furtwangen got the lone break of serve in the first game and finished off the match on his second match point.

Fritz v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

With the right to potentially face Roger Federer, this seems like a massive opportunity for both players. We reckon this might go the distance.
