Sorana Cirstea v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 31-year old Romanian, and Zidansek, who is eight years younger.

Cirstea Eyeing a Second Paris Quarter-Final

Unlike her opponent ion Sunday, Cirstea has been here before, having been a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2009, and three times making the third round. However, the last of those previous occasions was seven years ago, so this is a welcome return to the limelight in  Grand Slams for the Romanian.

And she has made relatively serene progress beginning with a straight wets victory over an out of form Johanna Konta, the world 20 in the first round. She was made to work harder by the Italian Marina Trevisan in the second set, who took  a set of her, but she managed to overcome her in the end.

That earned her a third round tie on Friday with Daria Kasatkina of Russia, the world 37, and again Cirstea used her experience to progress. She began the match by having to save three break points, but broke the Russian next game, before saving another break point.

And, when the Russian did succeed in breaking her, Cirstea grabbed the break back immediately, eventually converting her fifth set point.

The first three games went against serve in the second set, at the end of which time Cirstea was a break up.

From there she was able to control the rest of the match, underlining her position with a further break before closing out the match,

Zidansek in Uncharted Territory

23 year old Zidansek is in completely uncharted territory.

Never before has she been beyond the second round of any Grand Slam event, and she had never won a single match in the main draw at Roland Garros before she pulled off a big surprise on Monday by coming from a set down and going within three points of defeat, to put out the number six seed, Bianca Andreescu, of Canada.

She then enjoyed a more comfortable victory over Madison Brengle, beating the American world 84 in straight sets for the loss of just five games.

Zidansek, though made a terrible start to her third round match with Katerina Siniakova, the world number 68, dropping he first set to the Czech  player to love.

A sequence of four dropped service games at the start of the second set left matters even, before Zidansek had to save three break points on her own serve and another in her next service game.

Survive them she did though and it went to a tie-break, where, for the very first time in the match, she had a chance against the Siniakova swerve. She duly took it, and, against the run of play, the match was level.

Buoyed by that, Zidansek broke Siniakova in the opening game of the third set, and controlled the rest of the match from there, breaking the Czech woman once more for good measure.

Cirstea v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Zidansek has never been this far in a Grand Slam before, whereas Cirstea has, but not for a long time. The Slovenian has youth on her side, but the greater experience of the Romanian may prove to be the decisive factor.
