Alison Van Uytvanck v Marina Melnikova Head to Head

The two ladies have met just once in their careers – almost 10 years ago in the 2012 WTA Joue-Les-Tours. Van Uytvanck won that game 6-3, 6-2.

Alison Seeking Form Revival on Grass

The 27-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck has struggled a lot with her form this season. Including the French Open, she has now lost her last five opening-round matches in a row.

Her last win on the tour came back in the Australian Open in February, where she beat Clara Burel of France in the first round to move up further. However, her run in Melbourne was halted by Yulia Putintseva in the next round in three sets.

Since then, the #61 ranked player has featured in the Madrid, Saint-Malo, Belgrade, and Strasbourg events. In all those tournaments, she fell right in the opener. In Paris last week, she was dispatched by Martina Trevisan right in the first round.

The last time Alison reached the penultimate round in a tournament was in 2020 WTA Lyon, where she was one of the four semifinalists. As for her last singles title, it came back in the preceding season in the Tashkent Open.

Against any other in-form player, Van Uytvanck’s chances of winning here would have been fairly low. But her Russian adversary is sailing in a similar tide.

Melnikova Survives a Three-Set Scare

Marina Melnikova’s opening match here in the Nottingham Open was quite a thrilling one. Facing the American qualifier Katie Volynets, the Russian found herself in a marathon battle to reach the next round.

The game lasted for two hours and 42 minutes and saw Melnikova win the third set in a tie-break to win the match 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(8). That win also marks the first time that the World No. 186 has won a main draw match on the WTA Tour this season.

The majority of her 2021 stints have been on the ITF circuit and even there, it wasn’t until recently she started to pick up the pace. Most recently, she was the runner-up in the ITF Oeiras 3 and a quarterfinalist in the ITF Oerias 2.

The 32-year-old last played in the French Open where she fell to Anhelina Kalinina in the qualifiers. Coincidentally, the same was the case here in Nottingham too but by the virtue of the Lucky Loser rule, she got a ticket in the main draw.
