Boulter On the Comeback Trail After Injury

Boulter is making her way back to fitness after a serious back injury, which derailed her just when she had broken into the world’s top 100.

Nottingham is her first WTA tour event since March, and, having been given a wildcard into the tournament, the world 262 has taken full advantage of the opportunity given her.

On Monday, she beat the Spaniard Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in straight sets, the world 98, and followed that up with an even better win over maria Bouzkova, the world number 52 and the sixth seed this week.

Boulter struggled during her opening serve game, but she eventually held and broke the Czech the following game. Bouzkova responded with a  break of her own, but Boulter immediately reclaimed the break, and after saving three more break points, consolidated that lead to take the set.

She then underlined her advantage by breaking Bouzkova in the opening game of the second set.

The Czech had chances to break back, could not take any of them and serving to stay in the match, was broken once more as Boulter advanced into the third round.

Watson Made to Battle in Second Round

Watson is a former Wimbledon champion, having won the mixed doubles title in 2016. In terms of singles, she has made the third round of her home Grand Slam three times, which is her best ever at any Grand Slam.

However, having been given a bye in the first round, she was made to battle in her first grass court match of this season by fellow Brit Tara Moore, ranked 476th in the world.

Watson began strongly, and was soon two breaks up in the first set. Moore recovered one of them but the number nine seed had enough in hand to close out the first set.

The first three games of the second set went with serve, but then Watson was the first to drop hers. She hit back to level but serving to stay in the second set, she offered up two break points, the second of which Moore converted.

Moore dropped her opening service game of the deciding set, but, to her credit, broke back once more. However, Watson then struck, breaking Moore again and having saved three break points of her own, broke yet again, this time finally able to serve out to finish the match.

Boulter v Watson Prediction and Tip

This is a tough match to predict, and much may depend on Boulter’s fitness and ability to play three matches In a row after her injury lay-off. If she is feeling no ill effects then she could win but for us Watson holds the edge.
