This will be a first meeting between the World No. 134 Gojowczyk and the 142nd-ranked Rodionov.

Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk fought back from a set down to defeat Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka in the first round of the Stuttgart Open on Wednesday.

Both players had six break point opportunities in the match, but it was the German who converted four and saved four to win the one hour and 57 minutes contest 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The 31-year-old Gojowczyk, who lost to Gianluca Mager in the first round at Roland Garros, had come to Stuttgart with a 3-2 record in 2021. He qualified for the main draw at the year’s first grass court event by beating Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 7-6 in the first qualifier on Monday and France’s Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 6-4 in the second qualifying round on Tuesday.

Gojowczyk, who reached a career-high ranking of 39 in 2018, reached the semifinals in Montpellier earlier this year. Coming through the qualifiers, he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, Jiri Vessely and Dennis Novak, before losing to Roberto Bautista Agut in the final four of the ATP 250 event.

Gojowczyk has featured in three ATP finals, winning the title in Metz in 2017 and finishing runner-up in Delray Beach and Geneva in 2018.

Rodionov Stuns Koepfer

Facing Gojowczyk in the second round will be 22-year-old Austrian wild card Jurij Rodionov, who kickstarted his Stuttgart campaign with a shock come-from-behind win over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

Outplayed in the first set by the World No. 59, Rodionov fought back to win the one-hour-and-48-minute contest 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In what was his first win on grass at the senior level, Rodionov converted four of nine break points and saved five of eight.

This is also Rodionov’s first main draw appearance at the ATP level this year. He had come in with a 2-8 overall career record.

A three-time champion at the Challenger level, Rodionov reached a fourth final earlier this year, finishing runner-up to Mackenzie McDonald in Nur Sultan.

Gojowczyk v Rodionov Prediction and Tip

Both players rallied to win their first-round matches but its the more experienced German who will be the favourite to advance to the quarterfinals. He has won three in the last three days and will look to keep the momentum going on Thursday.
