Kristina Mladenovic v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

Mladenovic leads her Chinese adversary by 4-1, last beating her in the 2018 Madrid Open. In fact, the number seven seed has won her past four meetings against Zhang on the tour.

The 28-year-old Kristina Mladenovic, who also happens to be ranked #1 on the doubles WTA circuit, is on the path of having one of her best singles tournament in 2021.

She started her journey in the Nottingham Open with a bye into the second round. There, she first dispatched Kurumi Nara in three sets and then set up the third-round clash with Caty McNally. She beat the American 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-1, in two hours and 10 minutes.

With this quarterfinal appearance here, Mladenovic has now matched her results from the Lyon Open earlier this season where she had a similar run too. She had also made it to the third round in the Australian Open. But apart from these, she has not seen that much joy this year yet.

The World No. 61 has also not won a singles title since the 2019 St. Petersburg Trophy. As a doubles player, however, she has seen some success this season. Most recently, she reached the final of the Italian Open with Marketa Voundrousova but had to settle for the runners-up title.

Zhang Continues her Straight-Set Affairs

Shuai Zhang is also having a terrific time in Nottingham, having just delivered her best singles performance since the last year’s French Open where she reached the fourth round.

The number four seed also started her journey here with a bye into the second round. Zhang is yet to drop a set so far in the tournament and has comfortably moved past the likes of Arina Rodionova and Zarina Diyas, most recently.

It is definitely a good turnaround in form by the 32-year-old Chinese, who up until this point has had a rather disappointing season. On clay, she just picked up one win in her seven appearances (including this year’s Roland Garros) while losing primarily in the opening rounds. It was the same case for her in the Australian Open and Miami Open too.

Nonetheless, Zhang is a formidable opponent who is capable of delivering big upsets. She has kept herself afloat in the top 50 through the last couple of seasons purely on the back of runs like these.

Zhang v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip

Mladenovic will start as the favourite but expect her to face heavy resistance. This may be a three-set affair but the Frenchwoman should come out on the top, given her slightly superior form, doubles pedigree, and her commanding lead in the head to head tally.
