Kostyuk Looking to Build on Impressive Career Start

Fresh from her stunning performance at the French Open, 2017 Australian Open girl’s champion Marta Kostyuk comes to Birmingham with hopes of making an impression on grass as well.

The Ukrainian doesn’t have much tour-level experience on grass and it will be interesting to see if she can have the same effect on the surface as on other surfaces.

The 18-year-old made heads turn when, as a 15-year-old, she reached the third round of the Australian Open in 2018. She has maintained that level of consistency in the majors, reaching the third round of the U.S. Open last year and the fourth round at Roland Garros this year.

In New York last year, she defeated Daria Kasatkina and Anastasija Sevastova to reach the Round of 32 and then took a set of Naomi Osaka, before falling to the Japanese player.

This year at Roland Garros, Kostyuk stunned the 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in the first round and then knocked out China’s Zheng Saisai and Russia’s Varavara Gracheva to reach the second week of a major for the first time. Her run eventually came to an end with a straight sets defeat to Iga Swiatek.

The Ukrainian right-hander had a terrific start to the season as she reached the semifinals of the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi. Some of the most significant wins in that tournament included victories  over Hseih Su-wei, Tamara Zidansek and Sara Sorribes Tormo (in the quarterfinals). She couldn’t make the final after falling to Veronika Kudermetova.

Kostyuk also reached the semifinals at the WTA 250 in Istanbul, but failed to reach the final again, falling to Sorana Cirstea.

Brengle Hoping to Put Nottingham Disappointment Behind

Facing Kostyuk in the first round will be American Madison Brengle, who didn’t have a great start to the grass court season after being knocked out by Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova in the first round in Nottingham. The American will however take heart from the fact that she took a set off the Ukrainian and didn’t go down without a fight.

Ranked 84th in the world, Brengle, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2015, made it to the second round at Roland Garros this year, but failed to go further after being outplayed by eventual semifinalist Tamara Zidansek.

The American is 4-9 in the main draws on the tour this year and has failed to win two in a row in any of the tournaments she featured in.

She did reach the final of an ITF event in Charleston, but lost to Claire Liu.

The 31-year-old has played in one WTA final in Hobart in 2015. She also reached the final of the WTA 125k at Newport Beach last year. Brengle’s best showing at Wimbledon was in 2017, when she reached the third round by beating Petra Kvitova in the Round of 64. She won her first-round matches in the last two editions as well.

Kostyuk v Brengle Prediction and Tip

The Ukrainian has been very impressive this year and she will look to continue impressing in Birmingham. However, Brengle will give her tough fight. Expect Kostyuk to win in three.
