This will be a first meeting between the 39-year-old Lopez and the 33-year-old Marchenko.

Lopez Looks To Start Well

Defending champion Feliciano Lopez heads to Queen’s with a 5-9 record this year. This will be the second tournament for the 39-year-old on grass this year. He defeated Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the first round in Stuttgart last week, but fell to Denis Shapovalov in a tight three-set Round-of-16 contest.

A solid grass court player, Lopez has won seven ATP titles in his career and four of those have come on grass, including two at Queen’s.

He won the Queen’s Club Championships in 2017 by defeating Marin Cilic in a dramatic three-set final and then repeated the feat in 2019, defeating Gilles Simon in another thrilling final that went the distance.

His other two titles on grass came at Eastbourne in 2013 and 2014.

The Spanish left-hander also has 11 runner-up finishes in his career, and one of those was at Queen’s in 2014, when he went down to Grigor Dimitrov in another three-set thriller.

A three-time quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, Lopez is not in great touch this year having struggled to win two matches in a row. The only time he did it this year was at the Australian Open, where he beat Li Tu and Lorenzo Sonego to reach the third round before falling to Andrey Rublev.

Marchenko Comes Through Qualifiers

Facing Lopez in the first round will be 33-year-old Ukrainian Illya Marchenko, who qualified for the main draw by defeating Britain’s James Ward 6-4, 7-6 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The World No. 161 had won the first qualifying round by knocking out Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Marchenko featured in the Nottingham Challenger last week and won his first match against Italian Federico Gaio. He lost in the next round to America’s Frances Tiafoe.

A former top 50 player, the Ukrainian had won the Biella-1 Challenger earlier this year by defeating Andy Murray in the final. He also reached two semifinals and two quarterfinals at the Challenger level.

Overall, Marchenko has a 64-88 career record and he is 6-13 on grass at the ATP level.

Lopez v Marchenko Prediction and Tip

The vastly experienced Lopez has a great record at Queen’s and he will be looking to make another deep run this year as well. Expect him to begin the tournament with a straight sets win.
