Keys Searching for Consistency

Plagued by inconsistency, Madison Keys heads to Berlin with a 5-7 record in 2021.

The 2017 U.S. Open finalist has been searching for consistency ever since losing in the final of Brisbane International in 2020.

This year, Keys has featured in seven events, failing to win two consecutive matches in six of them. Her best came at Roland Garros, where she defeated Oceane Dodin in the first round and Leylah Fernandez in the second, before going down to Victoria Azarenka in the round of 32.

A five-time champion from 10 finals on the tour, Keys has a very good 29-10 record on grass. She has also won two titles on the surface, capturing the crown in Eastbourne in 2014 and in Birmingham in 2016. Keys’s best at Wimbledon was a quarterfinal showing in 2015.

Currently ranked 28th in the world, the 26-year-old American reached a career-high ranking of seven in 2016.

Having got into some sort of form in Paris, Keys will now be hoping to get into a good rhythm in Berlin.

Frech a Rank Outsider

Facing Keys will be Poland’s Magdalena Frech, who qualified for the main draw after defeating Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Saving all three break points in the match, Frech needed just 73 minutes to defeat Minella 6-2, 6-3. In the first qualifying round on Saturday, the Polish player had to fight back from a set down to beat Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Ranked 149th in the world, Frech has mostly featured in the qualifying and lower level tournaments this year. Her only main draw win on the tour, came at the Volvo Car Open, when she defeated American qualifier Grace Min in the first round, before falling to Garbine Muguruza in the next.

The 23-year-old, who has made three main draw appearances at the majors, has never gone past the qualifiers at Wimbledon.

Overall she has four singles and four doubles titles at the ITF Circuit.
