Gilles Simon v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry which has seen the two of them play each other four times before this. Simon leads 3-1 which includes a win on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

Coincidentally all of these matches came in the first round of competitions, including this one at Halle.

When Will That Win Come for Simon?

Simon must have been feeling rather good about himself when he came through in his first round match on the clay courts of Cagliari against Stefano Travaglia. After all, he was a rank outsider at 11/5 to win that encounter.

Unfortunately for Simon, things have gone badly pear-shaped since then.

He lost in the second round of that very tournament and from there on has not won any of the following six matches he has featured in. That’s a total of seven successive defeats, and just two sets won in them.

Simon’s transition to grass wasn’t too good either last week. Playing Lloyd Harris in his opener at Stuttgart, Simon lost in straight sets to crash out of the competition.

And now, while he is up against a qualifier, it’s the tricky Basilashvili who could inflict a horrid eighth successive defeat on him.

Basilashvili Makes a Decent Start on Grass

For a player who has been very erratic all season, Basilashvili would be reasonably satisfied with his showing on grass so far. Not very happy but it does give him a chance to shake off some of his inconsistencies this season.

At Stuttgart last week, Basilashvili crushed Dustin Brown in his first round match while losing to the eventual winner Marin Cilic in the second.

And here at Halle, Basilashvili has managed to earn himself a place in the main draw with back to back victories in the qualifiers. He first defeated Rudolf Molleker and then edged out Yannick Hanfmann in the second to make it to round one here.

Can he now take advantage of Simon’s horrid form and roll into the round of 16?

Simon v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

No surprises how much of a favourite Basilashvili is here, with bet365 offering 8/15 for this win. We reckon the win should not take too much out of him either and a games handicap of -2.5 looks good for us.
