Marin Cilic v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

There have been four previous matches played between these two players and Cilic leads Fognini 3-1 on head to head.

The first of their meetings was won by Fognini in 2009 in Monte-Carlo but Cilic then returned to claim the next three including their most recent match at the 2018 French Open. Interestingly their only match on grass came at an exhibition tournament in Boodles in 2014 and Cilic was a straight-set winner.

Cilic Makes it Six in Six

After winning his first ATP title in three years, Cilic played his first round match here in London just two days after that final. And the exhaustion seemed to show in Cilic but that didn’t stop him from edging out his opponent Sebastian Ofner and making it to the second.

Cilic was stretched to three sets and two hours and 20 minutes to carve out his win in a match that had two tie-breakers and saw the Croat get frustratingly close to closing out the match at different times but failed to do so.

After wrapping up the first set easily with two breaks of serves, Cilic broke Ofner again in the first game of the second set and it looked like he was going to run away with the match.

Ofner wasn’t done though, as he broke right back and soon pushed the set into a tie-breaker. Again, Cilic went 3-0 up in the tie-breaker only to six of the next eight points and afford his opponent a set-point that he gleefully took.

The final set saw Cilic earn break-points in three different games including three in the 12th game that would have given him the match. Instead it took him a tie-breaker to close things out.

Fognini Stretched by 624th-Ranked Player

Despite having a long and distinguished tennis career otherwise, Fognini has played just 38 matches on grass court surfaces. And that number along with his middling form showed despite his first round win against Yen-hsun Lu who is ranked 624th in the world.

Fognini, who was ousted in the third round at French Open, came through 6-4, 7-6 (3) but not before he was pushed to more than an hour and a half on court.

It took Fognini one break of serve to get past his opponent in the first set, and when he served for the match at 5-4 in the second, it looked like things were headed his way. Lu broke back to level out in the next game and then forced the set into a tie-breaker.

That is, however, where his fight ended as Fognini wrapped up the tie-breaker easily.

He now will need to up his game drastically if he needs to get past the in-form Cilic.

Cilic v Fognini Prediction and Tip

The only factor going against Cilic is he will be playing his seventh match in nine days and that is an exhausting run. The one mitigating factor there is on grass, matches are typically quicker and that should allow him more breathing space.
