Donna Vekic v Heather Watson Head to Head

The head to head tally is currently tied at 1-1, with Watson getting the last laugh in the 2018 WTA Hobart quarterfinal.

Vekic Overcomes Giorgi in a Marathon Match

Third seed Donna Vekic had to really fight for her quarterfinal spot in the Birmingham Classic against Camila Giorgi. In a game that lasted for nearly two and a half hours, the Croat prevailed with 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. What is impressive here is over the match, she saved 12 out of a possible 16 break points to prevent the Italian from leading her.

Playing her third tournament since the Australian Open, Vekic has done well to quickly find her groove. Last week in the Nottingham Open, she made it to the third round before falling to Nina Stojanovic. That was still a better run than her first-round loss in the French Open to the World No. 10 Karolina Pliskova.

The 24-year-old Croat hasn’t really had a chance to build some form and consistency this season. Shortly after her fourth-round appearance in the Australian Open, she underwent knee surgery and took a few months off to recover. But to see her play like this is definitely a positive sign.

Once a top 20 player, Vekic has three grass trophies to her name, two of which are the runner-up ones from the Birmingham Classic and Nottingham Open, the latter of which she had also conquered previously. But a pandemic-struck season and the surgery hasn’t done well for her form or even the rankings – she is currently #54.

Watson Continues Fine Run on Grass

Heather Watson reached the third round in Nottingham last week where she fell to Katie Boulter. However, in light of her quarterfinal appearance here in Birmingham, this is the most consistent the Brit has been in quite some time.

Currently ranked World No. 70, the best Watson has delivered before in 2021 was her second-round feat in the Australian Open and WTA Abu Dhabi. The 29-year-old went through the entire clay season without picking a single win. That said, she has done well to find her rhythm on her home turf.

In her opening match of the Birmingham Classic, Watson overcame Viktorija Golubic in a three-set affair. In the second round, she faced the sixth seed Shuai Zhang but the Chinese withdrew in the first set with an injury, giving Watson a walkover into the quarters. This is also the first time she has had a run like this since her title-winning performance in the 2020 WTA Acapulco.

Vekic v Watson Prediction and Tip

Vekic will start this match as the favourite, given her overall superiority in grass tournaments, as well as a player when compared to Watson. However, the latter has been quite good of late and may very well put up a solid fight.
