22-year-old Liudmila Samsonova has defied all conventions and expectations in the Berlin Open by reaching the semifinal, all the way as a qualifier.
She has delivered her single-best performance on the tour since the 2019 WTA Palermo Open; back then, she made it to the semis as well from the qualifying rounds before succumbing to Jil Teichmann.
It all started for Samsonova in the first round with a three-set win over Karolina Muchova. Then, she defeated her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets to reach the quarters. It was here she faced a rather resurgent Madison Keys but in two and a half hours with some very determined tennis, the young Russian took the match 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(0).
Up until now, the best she had managed was reaching the second round in the Miami Open and the Australian Open this season. In the entire clay swing, Samsonova picked up just six wins – three of which were in low-tier events while the other comprised qualifying wins and first-round wins.

Azarenka Pulls off a Thriller over Pegula
It needed Azarenka to take a circuitous route alright but in the end she prevailed over Jessica Pegula to reach the semifinal of this Halle event.
The Belarusian was a set up and serving to make it 5-3 in the second before a Pegula comeback based around two breaks of serves in three games pushed the match into the decider.
In the final set, the first four games were all breaks of serves but at 3-3, Azarenka broke Pegula for the sixth and the last time in the encounter before holding out to clinch her place in the semifinals.
An hour and 51 minutes later, Azarenka had defeated Pegula 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Earlier, Azarenka had seen off Andrea Petkovic and Angelique Kerber in straight sets to set up this meeting with Pegula and this will be her first semifinal appearance on grass since the 2012 London Olympics.
Azarenka v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
While Samsonova has continued to climb up the charts by surprising a few players in this tournament, we expect her to meet her match here as Azarenka could prove to be too good for the Russian.
